As reported in The Chronicle, Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels is prepared to take a big pay cut in order to secure a move away from the club.
What’s the Story?
Having completed the signing of Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on Wednesday, Newcastle will be keen to offload Sels who was on loan at Anderlecht last season.
The ‘keeper, who has been named in Belgium’s preliminary World Cup squad, hasn’t featured for Newcastle since he was dropped back in 2016.
Sels is something of a fan favourite at Anderlecht, who are the only team in the running to sign him according to The Chronicle, and he is prepared to take a substantial wage cut to join the Belgian team.
A fee of £4million has been suggested by the paper, a poor return on the £6.5million that Newcastle paid for the then Gent goalkeeper in the summer of 2016.
Wise move for the out of favour shot stopper
Although Rafa Benitez believes Sels could return to the Premier League one day and has a bright future ahead of him, it is clear that the Belgian needs to get away from the club, especially with even greater competition this season.
It is a move that should benefit all parties, with Newcastle eager to raise transfer funds with their rumoured interest in five further signings after Dubravka.
A popular figure in his native Belgium, Anderlecht will be happy to bolster their options between the sticks, especially at a knock-down price of £4million.
Having not featured for the Toon in two years, Sels will be no great loss and is the sort of player they should look to dispose of if they want to ensure strength in depth across the squad.
